SBU Physicians affiliated providers practice in 18 professional specialty groups that collectively provide quality medical services from primary care to the most advanced specialty care for patients of all ages. Stony Brook University Physicians affiliated practices and physicians are on staff at Stony Brook University Medical Center in Stony Brook, New York. Stony Brook University Medical Center is the only tertiary acute care hospital serving Suffolk County residents and visitors. Many physicians also have admitting privileges at other area hospitals. Please contact your doctor's office for specific information concerning hospital affiliations.

6 - Which insurance plans are accepted by SBU Physicians?
 
To review insurance plan information for a specific provider, or to search under your insurance coverage for all the Stony Brook providers that participate in your plan, please visit Insurance Plans Accepted. This feature enables you to review insurance plan information for a specific provider, or search under your insurance coverage, for all the Stony Brook providers that participate in that plan. Please Note: Regular updates to the website are made to help insure the accuracy of insurance participation status for each doctor. However, new patients should confirm that their insurance is accepted by a particular physician when they schedule an appointment.

7 - How do I schedule an appointment?
 
To schedule an appointment, please call your physician's office for an appointment. Please refer to the telephone numbers listed in our Find a Physician or Find a Practice links. New patients should provide the doctor's office with the name of their health insurance plan. Patients who have been seen before, should provide any changes in their insurance coverage or personal information that has taken place since their last visit. It is helpful if patients have their insurance card available when making an appointment. When you come to the office for your appointment, please bring your insurance information and all referrals and/or insurance authorizations. If you must cancel or reschedule an appointment, please let your doctor's office know at least 24 hours in advance.

8 - What should I do in an emergency?
 
Call "911" for a life threatening emergency such as a major accident, a sudden severe illness, or if for any reason you believe you are experiencing a medical emergency. If you go to an Emergency Room, tell the physician treating you the name and number of your physician. This will help aid communication with your physician if appropriate, and enable him/her to help coordinate your treatment. Patients should also follow applicable guidelines from their insurance carrier.

9 - Who can answer questions about my Physician's bill?
 
All SBU Physicians affiliated practices utilize a single billing agent. Therefore, if you have a question about your Physician's bill, please call our Customer Service phone line at (631) 444-4800, Monday through Friday from 8:00am - 4:30pm. For additional information on our payment policy, financial services and billing statements, use our Billing Information link. Please Note: If your questions relate to a hospital bill, please contact the customer service number listed on the bill.

10 - Can I find out what languages are spoken by my SBU Physicians affiliated doctor and his/her office staff?
 
SBU Physicians affiliated medical offices will try to meet your specific language needs, by using staff able to understand different languages or outside language translation services offered by phone. If you have special language needs, please let the office know when scheduling your first appointment. To review the languages spoken in our doctors' offices, please use the Visit our Offices or Find A Physician links under the "Patient Center" on the main menu.
